Ce film fait partie de notre série "Femmes de terrain". Il a été réalisé grâce au soutien de l’EHESS, à l’occasion des 70 ans de l’Ecole.

Nous avons voulu suivre la piste d’une des plus brillantes femmes de terrain du XXe siècle : Dorothy Garrod (1892-1968), archéologue anglaise, qui fut la première professeur femme à Cambridge, et à qui nous devons la découverte de sites et de cultures préhistoriques majeures au Proche Orient. C’est elle qui la première a démontré la cohabitation des Néandertaliens et des sapiens au Levant, ainsi que l’existence des plus anciennes cultures sédentaires, plus de 12 000 ans avant notre ère.

Pour cette enquête, nous nous sommes rendues en Israël en juin 2016. Nous avons sollicité et obtenu la participation des préhistoriens qui ont continué et affiné les recherches de Garrod sur le Paléolithique et l’Epipaléolithique du Levant. Avraham Ronen, Professeur d’archéologie à l’Université de Haïfa, a publié des synthèses majeures sur les cultures paléolithiques de cette région, et sur les premiers les peuples sédentaires du monde, les Natoufiens. Ofer Bar Yosef a centré ses recherches, tant sur le terrain qu’au plan théorique, sur le grandes transitions de l’histoire d’Homo sapiens. Il a co-dirigé avec Bernard Vandermeersch (Université de Bordeaux) une équipe israélo-franco-américaine, qui fit des découvertes majeures dans les sites du Mont Carmel en Israël. Il fut professeur à l’Université hébraïque de Jérusalem, puis à Harvard de 1988 à 2013. La nouvelle génération, représentée ici par Mina Weinstein-Evron, professeur à l’Université de Haïfa, prolonge de manière éclatante cette école de préhistoire israélienne : elle témoigne de la longue et prestigieuse postérité des travaux initiés par Dorothy Garrod.

Nous avons appris avec beaucoup de tristesse le décès d’Avraham Ronen, en 2018 – puis celui d’Ofer Bar Yosef, en mars 2020. Ce film, que nous avons réalisé en hommage à la remarquable préhistorienne et femme de terrain que fut Dorothy Garrod, est aussi dédié à leur mémoire.

This film is part of our “Women in the Field” series. It was produced with the support of EHESS, on the occasion of the School's 70th anniversary.

We wanted to follow the trail of one of the most brilliant women in the field of the 20th century: Dorothy Garrod, English archaeologist, who was the first female professor in Cambridge, and to whom we owe the discovery and study of major prehistoric sites and cultures in the Near East. It was Garrod who first demonstrated the coexistence of Neanderthals and Sapiens in the Levant, as well as the existence of the oldest sedentary cultures, more than 12,000 years before our era.

For this research, we travelled to Israel in June 2016. We sought and obtained the participation of prehistorians who took over from Garrod's research, and who continued and refined her work, both on the Paleolithic and on the Epipaleolithic of the Levant. Avraham Ronen, professor of archeology at the University of Haifa, was the author of major syntheses on the Palaeolithic cultures of this region, and on the first sedentary peoples of the world, the Natufians.. Ofer Bar Yosef focused his research, both in the field and theoretically, on the great transitions in the history of Homo sapiens. He co-led with Bernard Vandermeersch (University of Bordeaux) an Israeli-Franco-American team, who made new major discoveries in the sites of Mont Carmel in Israel. He was a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, then at Harvard University from 1988 to 2013. The new generation, represented here by Mina Weinstein-Evron, professor at the University of Haifa, brilliantly extends this school of Israeli prehistory: it testifies to the long and prestigious posterity of work initiated by Dorothy Garrod.

We learned with great sadness of the death of Avraham Ronen, in 2018 - then that of Ofer Bar Yosef, in March 2020. This film, which we produced in tribute to the remarkable prehistorian and field researcher Dorothy Garrod, is also dedicated to their memory.
