Short biography

Before joining the CRAL as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow, Lola San Martín Arbide was a Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, and a Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Fellow at the Media Department of the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU, Spain). She studied a BA in Translation & Interpreting, a BA in Musicology, and a MA in Hispanic Music at the University of Salamanca (Spain), where she obtained her Ph.D in Musicology in 2013. Her doctoral work explored the connections between ambient music and visual arts in the 20th century, with a special focus on issues related to urban culture. She has published on a wide variety of topics: Erik Satie’s Musique d’ameublement, Brian Eno’s ambient music, Spanish sound maps and sound ecology, soundscapes in 1930s French literature, film music, and interactive generative musical apps. She has carried out research stays at Sorbonne-Paris IV and at the Department of Musicology of UCLA (USA).

Lola has experience teaching master’s seminars and tutorials at Oxford and in lecture courses, at the University of Salamanca, on subjects such as French music, musical aesthetics, film music, music and mass media and music and nationalism. She is a member of the research group ‘Ciudad, comunicación y cultura’ at the University of the Basque Country, in Spain, and of the research network on Music in Audiovisual Media of the Spanish Musicological Society. She is also a  founder and co-director of the "Urban Rhythms" Network, supported by TORCH (University of Oxford, http://torch.ox.ac.uk/urban).

Additionally, she has also developed a career as a translator and sworn interpreter.

Current research project

She is currently working on the project “Aural Paris. The Changing Identities of The City of Sound in Music, Film and Literature, 1870-1940”. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 750086. “Aural Paris” studies how singer/songwriters, composers, authors and filmmakers —such as Aristide Bruant, Jean Cocteau, Gustave Charpentier, René Clair and Pierre Mac Orlan among others— used the city and its sounds as creative force and political metaphor. The study of these overlooked, or totally ignored, archival sources and cultural artefacts will enlighten our knowledge of how street culture and city life intersected with art during the Third Republic and will allow us to re-evaluate the politics of the city soundscape and its role in defining French identity.
